I was being a little coy in my previous post about the sources of possible funding I’ve stumbled across. So I’m going into more detail here.
First is the Curtis Brown Creative Breakthrough Novel-Writing Scholarship. Cut off date is 9th Feb. You need to submit a 3000 word writing sample. Prize is a 3 month intensive online course.
Second is the Jericho Writers’ Bursary. Cut off date is 15th Feb. Requires a 1500 word sample. Top prize is a 6 month intensive novel writing course.
The Writers’ HQ bursary is a rolling application process throughout the year. Requires a 2000 word sample. This is for a free membership to be able to take their courses for a year.
Finally, the Faber Academy has a cut off of 30th March to get a scholarship for their 12 week novel writing online course. Requires a 1000 word sample.
These are just what I can apply for as a white, Scottish, female living in the UK with a very low income and disability due to mental health. There are other bursaries open to people of colour, you just need to do a quick google to find them. Age might be another factor.
I’d be overjoyed if I were to win any one of these. However, I think my actual chances are slim because there are many like me applying for the same few opportunities. who are better writers. If I’m unsuccessful with these, I’ll turn to an old book I need to get a copy of, DIY MFA, so I can concoct MA/MFA courses for myself with minimum money.
As an aside, I’m now at 11,000 words. This has allowed me to apply for all the above, several asking that you’ve managed 10,000 words before you apply. My goal for the month is to write a further 19,000 taking me up to 30,000 words by 28th.
