First Draft Fun

I’ve completed the first draft of my short story, tentatively entitled ‘The Episode at the Church Hall.’

I have to admit, when I opened the document this morning I felt really despondant. My shiny new story was rather rubbish.

I won’t go into what it’s about for now but I will share what I’ve done today:

  • Tightened it up by about 150 words so it’s safely under the 2000 word count of the competitions I’m using it for
  • Checked for comprehension- were people saying the right things in the right places?
  • Changed the name of one character to be more culturally symbolic another to be historically accurate
  • Checked for how it reads out loud

Where I’m lacking surrounds characterisation and making it interesting. Which are kind of major issues…but I will continue to edit those issues tomorrow before putting it on ice for 12+ hours. So excited to get it out into the public arena but don’t want to do this too early as have about 12 days until I have to going by my timetable, Meh.

Nevermind. I’ve done all I can today. Got prescribed some new brain meds and I was warned about how they could make you drowsy. I’m fighting to stay awake right now so that’s my signal to wrap things up,

See you tomorrow!
